Birmingham 47,000
Oslo 18,000
Chicago 32,000
Manhattan 42,000

Hint
How much is each vowel (AEIOU) worth?
Answer
29,000 miles.
Reasoning
Each vowel (AEIOU) is worth 4,000 miles and each consonant is worth 5,000 miles.
Double-Checking
Sydney has 1 vowel (E = 1 x 4,000) and 5 consonants (SYDNY = 5 x 5,000) = 29 thousand miles.

Puzzle 51
Yesterday I was asked to buy some stamps.
Stamps, in the land of BrainBashers, are available in 2p, 7p, 10p, 15p and 20p denominations.
For three types of stamp, I was asked to buy five of each.
For the other two types of stamps, I was asked to buy six of each.
Unfortunately, I forgot which I was supposed to buy five of and which to buy six of.
I had been given £3.00, which just happened to be the exact money required, so the shopkeeper was able to work out what stamps I needed.
Which stamps did I buy?

Hint
I bought at least 5 of every stamp.
Answer
Five lots of 2p, 7p and 15p, and six lots of 10p, and 20p.
Reasoning
The shopkeeper rightly figured that I required five lots of all of the stamps, which came to (2p + 7p + 10p + 15p + 20p) x 5 = £2.70.
For two of the stamps I needed one more of each, and these must have added to the remaining 30p, so can only have been the 10p and 20p stamps.
