Puzzle 81
The legendary BrainBashers calendar has had a small problem.
Here is a listing showing the number of days in each month:

February 83
March 51
April 52
May 31

The first digit represents something, the second digit represents something else.

What numbers divide into 703?

Reasoning
703 can only be broken down into 19 x 37, it has no other factors.

Hint
Try starting with the cube root of the number.
Answer
42, 44, and 46.
Reasoning
As we require 3 numbers that are multiplied together, we can start with the cube root of 85,008 = 43.9696761...
We can now check that 44 divides 85,008 exactly: 85,008 ÷ 44 = 1,932, which means that 44 is likely to be one of the numbers.
And as we know that we need consecutive even numbers, we soon find 42 and 46 as the remaining numbers.
Double-Checking
42 x 44 x 46 = 85,008.
Puzzle 84
Unluckily, last week I lost my measuring tape. It was unlucky as I had to measure Billy's toy box.
Luckily though I could remember that the top had an area of 720 square inches, the side was 800 square inches and the end was 360 square inches.
What were the true dimensions of the toy box?

Hint
A little algebra might help.
Answer
Width=40, height=20, depth=18.
Reasoning
If we call the height H, the width W and the depth D we have:
H x W = 800
H = 800 ÷ W (1)
W x D = 720
W = 720 ÷ D (2)
H x D = 360
H = 360 ÷ D (3)
Using (1) and (3) we have:
800 360
——— = ———
W D
800 x D = 360 x W
Using (2):
800 x D = 360 x 720
———
D
800 x D2 = 259,200
D2 = 324
D = 18
Using (2), W = 40.
Using (1), H = 20.
