Remote Pairs

Remote Pairs is an advanced technique. Its name comes from a collection of locked pairs that are linked together remotely. The simplest way to picture them is to form a path through an even number of locked pairs (i.e. an even number of squares containing locked pairs). The intersection of both ends of the path cannot contain either of the numbers in the locked pair. The path may consist of two, three or more locked pairs (i.e. 4, 6 or more squares) and the intersection might be on a row, a column or in a 3x3 block.

There are two linked occurrences of a Locked Pair in <28>. R2C1 is the intersection of the ends and no matter which way around <28> actually go, R2C1 cannot be a <2> or <8>.

There are two linked occurrences of a Locked Pair in <26>. R5C6 is the intersection of the ends and no matter which way around <26> actually go, R5C6 cannot be a <2> or <6>.

There are three linked occurrences of a Locked Pair in <26>. R7C7 is the intersection of the ends (i.e. buddies of both ends) and no matter which way around <26> actually go, R7C7 cannot be a <2> or <6>.
